Former Indiana Sen. Dan Coats said Wednesday that he's moving ahead with a campaign against Sen. Evan Bayh this year, one week after confirming that he was mulling a challenge to the two-term Democratic legislator.
"I'm going to put my heart and soul into this, because I don't think Hoosiers are supporting what's going on in Washington," Coats told the Indiana radio station WOWO. "I think they need an alternative and that's why I'm here."
Pressed as to whether that was a definitive statement that he's running for Senate, Coats answered: "That is a 'yes.'"
"We've got to dot some i's and cross some t's on the, you know, process of getting certified and so forth. We're off to a great start," Coats explained, noting that the filing deadline was approaching quickly. "Hundreds of volunteers and Hoosiers are helping us and we're going to do it."
The former senator pointed to the record of the Obama administration and the Democratic Congress as the motivation for his surprise return to electoral politics.
"I've felt a call to service throughout my life, whether it was in the Army early on or representing the people of Indiana, ambassador to Germany. These calls keep coming," Coats said. "As I have watched things unfold this past year in Washington under Obama, Pelosi, Reid, I am more than alarmed about the direction this country is going."
"Instead of focusing on getting this economy going, Washington is focusing on massive new federal programs and federal spending," Coats continued.
Coats spokesman Kevin Kellems added to POLITICO that Coats "is running to replace Sen. Bayh — to help keep all Americans safe and get Hoosiers back to work."
